Team Japan, Team China Win Foil and Sabre Gold at Tokyo Asian Fencing Championships

TOKYO, Japan, June 16, 2019—Men’s and women’s teams from Japan and China took gold medals in foil and sabre fencing at the 2019 Tokyo (Chiba) Asian Fencing Championships. This was the fourth of six days of individual and team competition, with 28 international teams from Asia and Oceania participating in the day’s events.

In the men’s team foil event, Japan fenced China in the gold-medal match, winning with a 45-43 score. China beat Korea in the semi-final, 45-33, and Japan defeated Hong Kong, 45-36. The bronze medal went to Hong Kong over Korea, 45-42.

The Chinese team won gold in the women’s team sabre event, beating Korea 45-38. Korea overcame Kazakhstan in the semi-final, 45-15, while China eliminated Japan, 45-34. Japan took the bronze medal against Kazakhstan, 45-35.

Final rankings for team men’s foil at the Asian Championships included Japan (gold), China (silver), Hong Kong (bronze), Korea, Chinese Taipei, Australia, Kuwait and Singapore.

For team women’s sabre, final rankings included China (gold), Korea (silver), Japan (bronze), Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, Iran, Singapore and Thailand.
