Italy’s Foconi and Team Russia Win Gold at Paris Men’s Foil Fencing World Cup

PARIS, France, January 13, 2019—Italy’s world champion fencer Alessio Foconi has scored gold at the Challenge International de Paris (CIP) Men’s Foil World Cup, and Russia took the gold for the men’s team foil event. The competition, which took place at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin, featured more than 250 top-ranked individual fencers and 30 teams participating.

Foconi faced USA’s Gerek Meinhardt in the final match, winning with a 15-12 result. Meinhardt beat Italy’s Giorgio Avola in the semi-final, 15-13, while Foconi defeated USA’s Race Imboden, 15-12. Notably, Avola defeated his teammate and Olympic gold medallist, Daniele Garozzo, in the quarter-finals, 15-12.

In men’s team foil, Russia scored the gold medal against Italy, 45-40. Italy beat Korea in the semi-final, 45-33, and Russia overcame USA, 45-36. The USA team took the bronze medal over Korea, 45-41.

The top-eight individual finalists in the Challenge International de Paris Men’s Foil World Cup include Alessio Foconi (ITA, gold), Gerek Meinhardt (USA, silver), Giorgio Avola (ITA, bronze), Race Imboden (USA, bronze), Daniele Garozzo (ITA), Alexander Massialas (USA), Erwann Le Pechoux (FRA) and Edoardo Luperi (ITA).

The top-eight countries in the men’s team foil event include Russia (gold), Italy (silver), USA (bronze), Korea, France, Japan, Hong Kong and Poland.
