ALGIERS, Algeria, Feb. 2-4, 2018 – Italian World Championship silver medallist Alice Volpi took the gold medal this weekend in Algiers at the Algerian Women’s Foil Fencing World Cup by Ooredoo. Nearly 150 women’s fencers participated in the event, which took place at the Hacene Harcha Sports Arena. The Russian women’s team also earned gold in the women’ team foil event, with 16 international teams competing.
Volpi fenced the final match of the women’s individual event against her teammate, Erica Cipressa, winning with a score of 15-6 for the gold. Cipressa beat Russian Olympic gold medallist and two-time world champion Inna Deriglazova in the semi-final match, 15-10, to make the final. Volpi edged-out a close win in the same round against Polish fencer Hanna Lyczbinska, 15-14.
In the women’s team foil event, Russia overcame France in the final round, 42-32. France had beaten Italy in the semi-final, 45-38, while Russia won a tight match against USA, 45-44. The USA team earned the bronze medal over Italy, 45-34.
The top-eight overall individual women’s foil ranking from the Algeria World Cup include Alice Volpi (ITA, gold), Erica Cipressa (ITA, silver), Inna Deriglazova (RUS, bronze), Hanna Lyczbinska (POL, bronze), Hyunhee Nam (KOR), Chiara Cini (ITA), Nzingha Prescod (USA), and Elisabetta Bianchin (ITA).
The top-eight women’s foil team rankings place Russia (gold) first, followed by France (silver), USA (bronze), Italy, Korea, Japan, Canada, and Germany.
