Death of Antonio Spallino (ITA)

It is with great sorrow that we inform you of the passing of Antonio Spallino, Italian fencer, on September 27, 2017 in Como, Italy at the age of 92. Born in Como on April 1, 1925, Mr. Spallino was a world and Olympic Champion who practised both foil and épée. He won gold, silver and bronze medals at two Olympic Games:

- Silver medal in team men’s foil in Helsinki in 1952

- Bronze medal in men’s individual foil and gold in men’s team foil in Melbourne in 1956, together with Luigi Carpaneda, Manlio di Rosa, Giancarlo Bergamini, Vittorio Lucarelli and Edoardo Mangiarotti.

Antonio Spallino was world champion in men’s team épée in 1949 and men’s team foil in 1954 and 1955. He was champion of Italy in épée in 1949 and foil in 1958. After his fencing career, Mr. Spallino became a lawyer.

He was president of Panathlon International from 1988 to 1996, and mayor of the city of Como from 1970 to 1985.
