TBILISI, Georgia, July 28, 2025 – The USA won the gold medal in women’s team foil at the 2025 Tbilisi Fencing World Championships and Italy won the gold medal in men’s team sabre. It was the fifth day of finals, with a total of 12 gold-medal events in women’s and men’s individual and team competition in epee, foil and sabre. The Championships are taking place in Tbilisi’s Olympic Palace with 29 women’s and 32 men’s teams competing today in foil and sabre.
The USA faced France in the final match of women’s team foil, winning with a 45-24 score. In the semifinal round, France won against Italy, 45-34, while the USA defeated Japan, 45-41. The bronze medal went to Italy over Japan, 45-30.
“I’m super ecstatic and it’s a little unreal”, said the USA’s Lauren Scruggs. “It was a little shaky at first and we had some close matches, but in the last two bouts we pulled it together. We had a very, very close bout with Spain until the very end, but in tough situations we ‘lock in’, trust yourself to get the touch. We support each other, we’re really loud on the bench. We’ve been working really hard, we had a bunch of training camps this year, and we’ve really just been grinding it out. This season has been really good. We wanted to go out strong and dominate from the get-go.”
Italy faced Hungary in the final match of men’s team sabre, winning with a 45-37 score. In the semifinal round, Hungary won against Romania, 45-40, while Italy defeated Japan, 45-36. The bronze medal went to Romania over Japan, 45-41.
“It’s really crazy, we’ve worked a lot to be here”, said Italy’s Matteo Neri. “We didn’t think we could achieve this, in this little amount of time. We work a lot together, we are friends, we live in Bologna and we train a lot together, and Luca came to train with us. I don’t want to say today was easy, but we fenced incredibly and the level was so high. The first and last matches were hardest, and we just focused on ourselves.”
Final rankings in women’s team foil included USA (gold), France (silver), Italy (bronze), Japan, Canada, Spain, Hungary and Ukraine.
Final rankings in men’s team sabre included Italy (gold), Hungary (silver), Romania (bronze), Japan, France, Korea, China and Poland.
