LAUSANNE, Switz., March 4, 2025 – The FIE is saddened to learn of the passing of Farhad Kasimov (AZE) on March 1. Since 2017, he served as Vice-President of the Azerbaijan Fencing Federation.
Kasimov was born on June 2, 1964, in Baku. A fencer since he was eight, he grew to win a gold medal at the Azerbaijani Championships in men’s sabre, going on to become a candidate for the USSR senior national team. He earned medals in several international tournaments held in Hungary, Romania and Belarus. He participated in several Veteran World Championships, including earning a bronze medal in men’s 50-59 sabre in Straslund, 2016.
Following his athletic and competitive career, he coached fencing in Russia, Canada and the USA.
While holding his high-level position in the Azerbaijan Fencing Federation, Kasimov was recognized for his dedicated work with junior and young athletes, playing an important role as part of a national system contributing to developing young coaches for the country.
The FIE extends its sincere condolences for their loss to Farhad Kasimov’s family and friends, the Azerbaijan Fencing Federation and the European Fencing Confederation, and expresses its deepest sympathy during this difficult time.
