Russia and Italy Win Gold in Team Men’s Epee and Women’s Foil at European Fencing Championships in Serbia

NOVI SAD, Serbia, June 20, 2018—The Russian men’s epee and Italian women’s foil teams scored gold in the fifth day of the European Zonal Fencing Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia. In all, 32 teams participated in the day’s two events, taking place at the Novi Sad SPC Vojvodina “SPENS” Sports Center. This was the fifth day of competition, with six days scheduled of individual and team events.

In men’s team epee, Russia fenced France in the final match, winning with a 45-34 result. The French team beat Switzerland in the semi-final round, 45-27, while Russia defeated Italy, 45-40. Italy successfully took the bronze medal against Switzerland, 45-29.

The women’s team foil event featured Italy edging-out Russia in the final match by a single touch, 41-40. In the semi-final rounds, Russia beat France, 45-31, and Italy defeated Germany, 45-26. For the bronze medal, France overcame Germany, 45-26.

The overall top-eight ranking for men’s team epee at the European Championships includes Russia (gold), France (silver), Italy (bronze), Switzerland, Ukraine, Estonia, Hungary and Israel.

The top-eight rankings from women’s team foil include Italy (gold), Russia (silver), France (bronze), Germany, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine and Spain.
