FIE Statement on ASOIF Examples of Good Governance Practice

The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has been included as an example of good governance practice in several categories in the latest paper shared by the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF), reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen governance across the organisation.

Following on from the Sixth Review of International Federation Governance conducted by the ASOIF Governance Task Force, the Examples of Good Governance Practice 2025-26 highlights governance excellence among ASOIF Member International Federations (IFs).

The paper recognises IFs that have set a benchmark for transparency, accountability and leadership in the Olympic Movement.

The FIE was cited as an example of good practice in several of the Review questionnaire’s 60 scored indicators, which required IFs to demonstrate “industry-leading” performance – a demanding standard and a powerful testament to the strength and ambition of the FIE’s governance model.

“The latest ASOIF assessment reflects the FIE’s sustained commitment to transparency, accountability, integrity and continuous improvement,” said FIE President-Interim Abdelmoneim ElHusseiny. “It is an honour for our efforts to be recognised as we continue to develop and implement industry-leading good governance practices as part of our Strategic Plan 2025-2028.”

Among the practices the FIE ranked highly for are:

Allowances and benefits – ASOIF recognised the Federation’s reporting in its Administrative Rules, Chapter 7, and Financial Report. The FIE’s clear specification of amounts of allowances and benefits in its financial documents demonstrates transparency and reinforces the Federation’s status as a benchmark for good practice;

Summary of meeting decisions – the FIE was included in this category for the publication of Executive Committee and Bureau decisions in the Information Letters section of its website, ensuring that stakeholders can clearly see and understand the Federation’s decision-making processes;

Safeguarding – ASOIF referenced the FIE’s Safeguarding Policy in its Statutes, the inclusion of Safe Sport in its 2025-2028 Strategic Plan, and its dedicated Safe Sport homepage. The FIE’s work in this area clearly exhibits our determination to create an exemplary, safe and respectful environment for all fencing participants;

Education Programmes – the FIE stood out as a dynamic force for learning and development, with ASOIF acknowledging the wide-ranging educational webinars, education for judges and Olympic Solidarity courses. These initiatives demonstrate the Federation’s investment in knowledge, capacity-building and the long-term growth of fencing worldwide; and

Integrity Education – the FIE was included as an example of good practice in this vital area, with ASOIF recognising our educational programmes at each World Championships, impactful Clean Sport Programme, and educational programmes on safe sport and fair play. The FIE aims to continue its efforts in order to remain a leading example of integrity-driven governance in international sport.

The Examples of Good Governance Practice 2025-26 paper provides a significant endorsement of the FIE’s status in international sports governance. It highlights the FIE’s strong performance across transparency, accountability, safeguarding, education and integrity, positioning the Federation as an example of good governance practice within the Olympic Movement.

While this recognition is encouraging, the FIE remains focused on the work still ahead. The Federation will continue its mission, in close cooperation with its Olympic Movement partners, to build on this progress and strengthen its governance practices even further. In doing so, it will continue advancing towards its goal to become a global model for International Federations, setting the benchmark for institutional excellence, competitive fairness and worldwide fan engagement.
