Korea’s Choi, Team Poland Win Gold at Dubai Women’s Epee Fencing World Cup

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, May 19, 2019—Korea’s Injeong Choi took the gold medal at the Dubai Women’s Epee World Cup, with Team Poland winning the team event. In all, 238 international women’s fencers competed along with 29 teams. The event took place at Dubai’s Shabab Al Ahli Club venue.

Choi fenced USA’s Courtney Hurley in the gold-medal round of the women’s individual event, winning with a 15-12 score. Hurley overcame Russia’s Violetta Kolobova in the semi-final round by a point, 15-14, while Choi beat Hong Kong’s number-one ranked Man Wai Vivian Kong, 15-6. Notably, Italian world champion Mara Navarria was eliminated in the round of sixteen by France’s Auriane Mallo, 15-13, who was then eliminated by Kolobova in the quarter-finals, 15-10.

In the women’s team epee event, Poland beat USA in the final, 41-28, to take the gold medal. USA defeated China in the semi-final round, 45-35, while Poland beat Italy, 36-30. The bronze medal went to Italy, after winning against China by one point, 30-29.

Overall women’s ranking for the Dubai Women’s Epee World Cup individual event included Injeong Choi (KOR, gold), Courtney Hurley (USA, silver), Violetta Kolobova (RUS, bronze), Man Wai Vivian Kong (HKG, bronze), Ana Maria Popescu (ROU), Yiwen Sun (CHN), Auriane Mallo (FRA) and Erika Kirpu (EST).

Ranking for the women’s team epee event included Poland (gold), USA (silver), Italy (bronze), China, Russia, Korea, Estonia and Hungary.
