Bangladesh Hosts National Fencing Championships

DHAKA, Bangladesh, January 2018—The 5th President Cup Fencing Championships were held recently in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from December 26-30. The event took place at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium, with all weapons represented and about 350 total participants, both men and women, competing from the military as well as fencing associations, schools and clubs.

Notably, the Bangladesh Ansar & VDP (paramilitary troops) took eight gold, two silver, and six bronze medals, consequently being named overall champion of the tournament. The Bangladesh Army received three gold, one silver, and eight bronze medals and was named tournament champion runner-up. The Bangladesh Navy earned one gold, six silver, and three bronze medals; Border Guard Bangladesh received three silver and two bronze medals; and Dhaka Commerce College took five bronze medals.

The opening ceremony was featured the Honorable Information Minister Mr. Hasanul Haq Inu, MP, from the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh as a Chief Guest. Dr. Atiur Rahman, former Bangladesh Bank Governor, was the Chief Guest of the closing ceremony. Two foreign referees were on-hand to ensure neutrality, Mr. Abhishek Karki (NEP) and Mr. Sadesh Chandana (SRI).

Other competing participants in the event included the Mymensingh Fencing Association, Rajshahi Fencing Association, Quantum Cosmo School and College, Mirpur Cosmo School and College, Chittagong Fencing Association, and Sylhet Fencing Association.
