Alisher Usmanov is Commander of Italy’s Highest Award

Italian President Sergio Mattarella awarded Alisher Usmanov, President of the International Fencing Federation, the Order “For merits to the Italian Republic”/ Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana, 4th Class.

This high award was presented to one of the leading Russian philanthropists for his active support of projects for restoration of architectural and art monuments in Moscow and Rome.

This primarily involves the restoration of Manor of Berg in Moscow, which has been housing the Italian Embassy since 1924. Besides, restoration embraced famous Roman cultural monuments, such as the Hall of the Horatii and Curiatii in the Capitoline museums, the Fountain of the Dioscuri on the Quirinal Square and the Forum of Trajan in Rome.

The Order “For merits to the Italian Republic” is the country’s highest award with which the President decorates people in recognition of their merits in the area of literature, economy, philanthropy and public activities.
