Death of Marcus Leyrer AUT

Letter from the European Fencing Confederation

Dear Member Federation,

we received here in Plovdiv during the European Cadet and Junior Championships the sad information that already on 22nd February Marcus Leyrer had died in Bern after a long period of illness at the age of 87.

A well-known former successful Austrian fencer and long-time official of the Swiss Fencing Federation he was many years in charge of Swiss Junior Fencing. Working in Switzerland for an Insurance Company he was one of the co-founders of the junior world cup competitions in Küssnacht am Rigi when these events started during the period of former FIE President Pierre Ferri. As team captain of the Swiss juniors he was the organiser of all their participations at world championships for a long time.

Marcus was also known as an expert for fencing stamps and his collection was nearly complete, having exchanges with other collectors worldwide.

We send our deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and to the Austrian and Swiss Fencing Federations.

Stanislav Pozdnyakov

President
