Pan American Fencing Championships at a glance

Men

Yunior Reytor Venet (CUB) won the gold medal in men's individual épée, to hand Cuba its first Pan American Championships title in this event since 2010, when Guillermo Madrigal Sardinas (CUB) triumphed.

Reytor Venet finished in 20th place in this event at the 2015 Pan American Championships in Santiago and recorded a seventh-place finish in 2013 in Cartagena.

The last five editions of this event have now been won by five different fencers: Reytor Venet, Ruben Limardo Gascon (VEN), Francisco Limardo (VEN), Silvio Fernandez (VEN) and Soren Thompson (USA).

Venezuela had won the previous three gold medals in men's individual épée (2013-2015) but failed to reach the podium for the first time in this event since the first-ever edition of the Pan American Championships in 2006.

Jason Pryor (USA) claimed silver to hand United States its 12th medal in this event at the Pan American Championships (W3-G3-S6), joint-most along with Venezuela (G5-S3-B4).

Alexander Massialas (USA) grabbed his sixth Pan American Championships medal in men's individual foil and his first-ever gold (G1-S4-B1).

Only Gerek Meinhardt (USA), who finished in 12th place in Panama, has won more medals in this event at the Pan American Championships (8) than Massialas (6).

United States have now won nine of the last 10 Pan American Championships titles in this event and each of the last six since 2010, when Antonio Leal (VEN) triumphed.

Defending champion Race Imoden (USA) took bronze to claim his fifth medal in this event in the competition (G3-S1-B1).

Daniel Gomez (MEX) collected his and Mexico's second medal in men's individual foil. In Panama, he claimed silver after a bronze medal in 2011.

Renzo Agresta (BRA) won the Pan American Championships title in men's individual sabre for the second time after 2013.

Agresta joined Eli Dershwitz (USA) and Keeth Smart (USA) for a record two gold medals in this event.

Agresta has now collected a total of five Pan American Championships medals in this event (G2-S0-B3), only one shy of all-time record holder Philippe Beaudry (CAN, G0-S1-B5).

Dershwitz, who claimed gold in this event in both 2014 and 2015, took bronze in Panama.

Jose Quintero (VEN) also grabbed bronze to hand Venezuela its fourth medal in this event and its first since 2010, when Hernan Jansen (VEN) took silver.

Venezuela won the Pan American Championships title in men's team épée for a record extending fifth time and for the first time since 2013.

United States (6th) failed to reach the podium in men's team épée for the first time ever in history of the Pan American Championships (2006-2016).

Venezuela have now collected a total of nine medals in team épée (G5-B3-S1), one shy of record holders United States (G2-S2-B6).

Colombia took bronze to claim their first ever medal in this event.

United States extended their winning run in men's team foil, as they claimed their ninth consecutive title in this event at the Pan American Championships (2008-2016).

The only two other editions were won by Canada (2006 and 2007).

United States again claimed gold in men's team sabre. They have won all 11 Pan American Championships titles in this event.

Canada (4th) failed to reach the podium in men's team sabre for the first time in history of the Pan American Championships (2006-2016).

Women

Kelley Hurley (USA) claimed her seventh Pan American Championships medal in women's individual épée and her second gold after 2011 (G2-S3-B2).

Kelley's sister Courtney Hurley (USA) grabbed bronze. Kelley (2) and Courtney (3) have now won five of the last eight gold medals in this event.

Katherine Holmes (USA) also claimed bronze. United States have now collected 25 of all 44 medals awarded in women's individual épée (57%).

Maria Martinez (VEN) took silver to hand Venezuela its third medal in this event and its first since 2009, when Eliana Lugo (VEN) and Karilin Rojas (VEN) both collected bronze.

Lee Kiefer (USA) won gold in women's individual foil, her seventh Pan American Championships title in this event in a row (2010-2016).

Kiefer became the first fencer ever to win seven gold medals in a single individual event (both men and women) at the Pan American Championships. Mariel Zagunis (USA) has claimed a total of six titles in women's individual sabre.

Only Gerek Meinhardt (USA, 8), who finished in 12th place in men's individual foil, has won more medals in this event (both men and women) at the Pan American Championships than Kiefer (7).

Six-time champion Mariel Zagunis (USA) collected silver and is the only fencer (male or female) who has claimed a medal in all 11 editions of the Pan American Championships (individual events only).

United States have now won 10 of all 11 gold medals in women's individual sabre. Maria Perez Maurice (ARG), who took bronze this year, is the only non-American fencer who has ever claimed gold in this event at the Pan American Championships (2014).

Canada won gold in women's team épée to end Unites States' five-year winning streak in this event at the Pan American Championships (2011-2015).

It was Canada's third gold medal in this event and their first since 2007. They also won the Pan American Championships title in women's team épée in 2006.

United States again claimed gold in women's team foil and have now won each of the last 10 Pan American Championships titles in this event (2007-2016).

Venezuela (2006) is the only other team to ever have won this event in the competition.

Canada collected silver in women's team foil for the ninth edition in a row.

United States maintained their perfect record in women's team sabre as they beat Mexico in the final. They have now won all 11 editions of this event (2006-2016).
