Kick off for the Fencing Grand Prix Series in Turin with women’s foil

This is the first time of the FIE history that the Fencing Grand Prix becomes a Series of nice events in nine iconic cities around the world. After the first foil event in Turin, FIE will continue the Series in Doha with epee and in New York with sabre competition for the year 2014. The Series will visit exceptional cities in almost all continents for the year 2015, ensuring a great promotion to our sport worldwide.

From 28 to 30 November, Turin hosted the first Fencing Grand Prix "Trofeo Inalpi in men's and women's foil. For the seventh time in a row, the FIE and the Italian Fencing Federation have commissioned the Accademia Scherma Marchesa to organise the event, which has a particular meaning this year: Turin is the only European city, as well as the first of the nine world stages of the "Fencing Grand Prix" circuit. A true revolution in the FIE calendar, which, starting this year, schedules at the same time both the men's and the women's competition, thus bringing together in three days of fencing all the elite athletes. The PalaRuffini di Torino hosted the women’s foil finals at the Sisport Torino on Saturday 29 November.

Arriana Errigo (ITA), the World Campion of the last two Fencing Word Championships dominated on the final against Elisa Di Francisca (ITA) in women’s foil.

Arriana on her gold medal : Since London 2012 and my silver medal, I am aware of my ability to win and I want to keep that. I want to focus on the target and never give up.

The road to Rio is a long one, and i need to be ready. There will be only individual competition and I will make sure that I will be there and win.

The Secretary General of the FIE, Frédéric Pietruszka reports: I would like to share with you the excitement of organizing the first Fencing Grand Prix Series in the city of Turin that enjoyed magnificent foil competitions this weekend. The first edition of the Fencing Grand Prix started in this historic fencing city and will continue its success in other continents.

We now have 150 federations in the FIE with seven additional countries from the Africa continent that joined FIE the last five years. Fencing is growing in the other continents, not just in Europe.

The Vice President of the FIE, Giorgio Scarso and President of the Italian Fencing Federation commented: This is a competition of the World Champions, of the elite athletes, that gives them a great experience and opportunity to qualify to the Olympic Games for Rio.

This afternoon the men's foil finals will take place at the PalaRuffini di Torino.
