Qatar Takes The Lead On Women Coaching Development In Fencing

“Ladies first:” From the 30th of November to the 3rd of December, Qatar offers the possibility to women coaches at the beginning of their career to develop their skills further. This very specific Technical course for coaches is sponsored by the Qatar Olympic Academy in collaboration with Qatar Fencing Federation and the FIE – International Fencing Federation.

The Fencing Master appointed to run the course – which will be at foil, level 1 - is Mr Petru Kuki (ROU), whose cooperation with FIE is a lifelong one.

Priority is given to women.

12 countries selected from three different continents are invited from the FIE to join the workshop: from the –Stan, the Magreb, Middle East and finally Europe:

  • Qatar
  • Uzbekistan
  • Kazakhstan
  • Kyrgyzstan
  • Egypt
  • Algeria
  • Lybia
  • Tunisia
  • Jordan
  • Lebanon
  • Syria
  • Türkiye

At the eve of its Annual Congress, the FIE welcomed with enthusiasm the initiative, perfectly aligned with the decision, taken earlier this year to focus on women coaching development. Several preparatory steps have been undertaken earlier this year, as the recruitment of women coaches available to run FIE TCC and training camps and the cooperation with ICCE to enhance a Women and Coaching development program. Parallel action was taken also in the refereeing domain, with the organisation of a refereeing seminar and exam reserved to women, which took place in June in St Jose USA). Fencing has a reputation of gender equity sport at athletes’ participation level, but there is space for improvement in the other areas of the sport at large, like officials, refereeing, and last but not least, coaching.
