Men's and Women's Team foil - Preview - Moscow Fencing WCH 2015

Men' team foil

Defending champions France are aiming to become the first team to retain the title in men's team foil since China, who won it in both 2010 and 2011.

The team foil events are the last ones staged at the 2015 World Championships in Moscow.

Since 2003, either France (4), Italy (4) or China (2) have won the world title in this event.

Italy and Soviet Union are the record holders with 14 gold medals in this event. France are right behind them with 13 world titles in this event. France have won most total medals in this event (31).

Italy are the Olympic champions from London 2012. In London, they defeated the Japanese team in the final.

Russia have yet to win this event at the world championships. The closest they came to winning it was their runner-up finish in 1995. Russia came fourth at the world championships in Kazan last year.

Andrea Cassara (ITA) is seeking his fifth gold medal in the team foil event at the world championships. Only six fencers have won this event on more than four occasions and only two have done it on more than five occasions. Cassara is also chasing his ninth total medal in this event. Only four fencers have won more than eight and only one has more than nine, Aleksandr Romankov (URS) who took 10. Erwan Le Pechoux (FRA) is also in search of his fifth gold medal in this event.

Italy (14) can equal Soviet Union on a record 15 world championship titles in women's team foil. Italy have won the last two editions of this event and can win it three times in a row for the second time in team history, after three consecutive wins between 1995-1998.

Hungary (4 times in a row, 1952-1955) and Soviet Union (6 between 1974-1981) are the only teams to have won the women's team foil at more consecutive world championships.

Women's team foil

Valentina Vezzali (ITA) can become the first ever fencer to win 13 medals in a specific event at the world championships. She currently shares the record of 12 with Giovanna Trillini (ITA, women's team foil). Vezzali has also won 12 world championship medals in individual foil. Coming into Moscow 2015, Valentina Vezzali leads the all-time world championships medal table with 15 gold medals. Vezzali's teammate Elisa Di Francisca (ITA) can win this event for the sixth time.

Since the start of this century, four teams have won this event at the world championships: Italy (6), Russia (3), Poland (2) and Korea (1).

Aida Shanaeva (RUS) won the gold medal with Russia in 2006 and 2011 and can become the first Russian fencer to win this event three times. Svetlana Boiko (RUS) won it twice (2002 and 2006). A medal of any colour will be Russia's 10th in women's team foil.

United States are eying their first gold medal in women's team foil. They have previously claimed a bronze medal in 2001. Considering both male and female team events, team foil is the only event United States have not won a gold medal in. They have won three gold medals in team sabre (women) and one in team épée (men).
