In the last 10 world fencing championships the gold medals in the individual épée have been won by women from 10 different countries.
Defending world champion Rossella Fiamingo (ITA) can become the first woman to win back-to-back world titles in the women's individual épée since Laura Flessel-Colovic (FRA) in 1998-1999. Fiamingo can join Flessel-Colovic (1998 and 1999) and Mariann Horvath (HUN, 1991 and 1992) as the only women with multiple world titles in this event.
Yana Shemyakina (UKR) is aiming to become the third woman to win the individual épée world title as reigning Olympic champion in this event. Timea Nagy (HUN) won Olympic gold in 2004 and was crowned world champion in 2006. Laura Flessel-Colovic won the 1998 and 1999 world title after winning gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
Britta Heidemann (GER) is hoping to win a fifth world championships medal in the women's individual épée after grabbing gold in 2007, silver in 2014 and bronze in 2002 and 2013. Only Laura Flessel-Colovic has won more in this event (6, G2-S1-B3).
Current world number 1 Emese Szasz (HUN) is aiming to add another world championships medal to Hungary's record 13 medals so far in the women's individual épée. France follows with 12 medals in this event.
Ana Branza (ROU), second ranked in the world, is hoping to better Romania's result in the women's individual épée. Anca Maroiu (ROU, 2011) and Branza herself (2002 and 2011) won bronze in this event. Branza won this event at the inaugural European Games in Baku last month beating Yana Zvereva (RUS) in the final.
Russia's Violetta Kolobova is the reigning European champion in this event and was part of Russia's team winning the women's team épée world title in 2013 and 2014.
Kolobova can become the third woman to win the world title in individual épée on home soil after France's Maureen Nisima in 2010 (Paris) and Hungary's Mariann Horvath in 1991 (Budapest).
Katharine Holmes (USA) will celebrate her 22nd birthday on the day of the women's individual épée.
