Elsayed Triumphs in Berne to Claim Epee World Cup Gold

The men's senior epee regular season reached its grand finale in Switzerland, where Egypt's Mohamed Elsayed put on a spectacular performance to capture the gold medal at the Berne World Cup. Serving as the fifth and final individual World Cup before the zonal and World Championships, the tournament saw the world number four establish total dominance on the strip. The victory marks Elsayed’s second individual title of the campaign—following his gold in Vancouver—and his fourth podium appearance of an extraordinary season that already includes bronze medals from the Heidenheim and Astana World Cups.

Elsayed, a Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medallist and three-time African Champion, demonstrated championship poise throughout a challenging direct elimination bracket. He began his day with a 15-12 victory over Sweden’s Svensson, before downing China’s Junior World Cup medallist Peng 15-11. In the round of 16, Elsayed survived a razor-thin 15-14 battle against Italian senior debutant Del Constrasto, followed by a comfortable 15-9 quarterfinal win over another senior debutant, Georgiy Bruev. He then booked his place in the final by eliminating Czechia's Jakub Jurka 15-12 in the semi-finals.

The gold medal match featured a high-stakes clash against Hungary's Tibor Andrafsi, ranked 26th in the world. Andrafsi reached the final following an outstanding, giant-killing day of fencing that included an emphatic 15-5 second-round victory over his 13th-ranked compatriot, the 2023 World Champion Máté Koch, and an 8-7 quarterfinal triumph over the reigning European Champion, Roman Svichkar of Ukraine. In the final, Andrafsi fought valiantly to cap off his best performance of the campaign with a silver medal. However, the Egyptian star proved too precise, executing clinical counteractions to seal the gold medal with a 15-12 victory.

The bronze medals were shared by Brazil’s Alexandre Camargo and Czechia’s Jakub Jurka. The 26th-ranked Camargo enjoyed a historic, breakthrough day in Berne to secure his first career senior World Cup medal. His incredible run to the podium featured massive upsets, including a 15-11 win over reigning World bronze medallist Masaru Yamada of Japan and a heart-stopping 15-14 quarterfinal victory over Italy’s world number two, Matteo Galassi. Joining him on the third step of the podium was world number nine Jakub Jurka, who collected his second senior World Cup medal following his silver at the 2025 Marrakesh World Cup. Jurka navigated his bracket with composure, culminating in a decisive 15-9 quarterfinal win against Spain’s Eugeni Gavalda, ensuring a world-class top four as the elite epee field transitions into the postseason championships.
