Statement - Junior & Cadet Fencing World Championships

The International Fencing Federation (FIE) and the Brazilian Fencing Confederation (CBE) can confirm that a fire broke out, in the early hours of this morning, on the roof of the Rio Olympic Velodrome. Since April 1st, the venue had been used for preliminary matches of the Junior & Cadet Fencing World Championships.

The venue was empty at the time, and local authorities have confirmed there have been no injuries. The safety and well-being of everyone involved in the Junior & Cadet Fencing World Championships is our absolute priority.

Fencing competitions had been taking place at both the Velodrome and Arena Carioca 1 (main venue). All competitions are now being held exclusively at Arena Carioca 1, located at a safe distance from the Velodrome.

The swift response of all teams involved allowed operations to be reorganised and competition to continue safely and in a timely manner at Arena Carioca 1.

The FIE and local organisers will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
