Press Release: Fencing Cadet and Junior World Championships in Poreč, Croatia, kick off tomorrow

Poreč, 5 April 2013 – From 6 to 15 April, the world’s best cadet and junior fencers will gather in Poreč, Croatia, to compete in the 2013 Fencing Cadet and Junior World Championships.

More than 1160 athletes representing 98 nations have registered for this annual highlight in the cadet and junior calendar.

The first medal events are scheduled for 7 April in cadet’s men’s sabre and cadet’s women’s foil. Junior competitions start on 9 April and close on 15 April with the team events in men’s foil and women’s sabre.

Team Italy will try to defend the first place in the nations table, challenged by the teams from Russia and the US. Top positions can also be expected by athletes from Korea, Israel, Hungary, France, Japan, China and Germany.

The international training camp organised by the FIE with more than 50 participants from all five continents ended today with great success. All participants have now the opportunity to compete in the world championships.

During the opening press conference held today in Poreč, Frédéric Pietruszka, FIE Secretary General, said: “We thank the Croatian Organising Committee and the Croatian Fencing Federation for providing the best conditions for this event. Cadet and junior world championships are an important event for the FIE. They provide a stage for young athletes from all over the world and from all backgrounds. I am sure that some of the participants will be on the podium of senior world championships several years from now. In addition, cadet and junior world championships are a cornerstone in our efforts to develop fencing all around the world because the participants take home the spirit of this event and help building the world wide fencing community.”

Fans and media can follow the live stream of the event on the FIE YouTube Channel and receive the latest information on the FIE Twitter @fie_en as well as on www.fie.org and the FIE Facebookpage.
