Press Release: Gold and silver to Italy in men’s foil cadets, Chang wins gold for Hong

Kong in women’s sabre

Porec, 10 April 2013 – The cadet events of the 2013 Cadet and Junior World Championships closed yesterday. With one gold medal, one silver and two bronze medals, Italy is heading the medal table. Second is team USA with one title, one silver and one bronze medal.

In men’s foil, Italy reinforced its position as an outstanding foil nation, as two Italian fencers,

Francesco Ingargiola and Tommaso Ciuti, advanced to the gold medal match. Both prevailed in close semi-final matches, Ingargiola defeating Marat Bakirov (RUS) 15:13 while Ciuti beat Toshiya Saito (JPN) 15:14. Ingargiola took then the momentum from the semi-final and went on to win the title 15:6 against his compatriot.

In women’s sabre, Karen Chang (HKG) overcame Vanessa Infante (MEX) in a one-sided fight 15:6. In the second semi-final, Theodora Goudoura (GRE) had a good start against Ann-Sophie Kindler (GER), leading soon 4:0. However, Kindler came back and the match became close again, 13:12 Goudoura. At 14:13, Goudoura stayed concentrated and closed the match with a parrey-riposte 15:13. In the final, Goudoura took again an early lead, 6:2, but Chang tied at 6:6. At 8:7, Chang went in front but Goudoura kept on fighting. It was an up and down for both fencers, the excitement in the venue culminating at 14:14. With a long attack, Chang finally scored the final hit and took the gold medal for Hong Kong.

FIE Secretary General Frédéric Pietruszka made a short resume about the first three days of competition: “We thank the organisers for providing such good conditions to the young fencers. Hosting over 1100 fencers from 98 countries is a challenge, but the Croatian Federation and the city of Porec have succeeded. The FIE is proud that already 16 different nations from four continents have won a medal here in Porec. This proves that the efforts of the FIE to develop fencing all over the world are bearing fruits.”

The International Fencing Federation (FIE) announced the re-launch of the successful Fencing application. Fans and media alike can follow the world championships on one platform live and watch the matches, get live results as well as the latest news.
