CAREER
He reflected on his career following a surprise loss to Brazilian fencer Guilherme Toldo in the first round of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. "I feel like I have a clear perspective [on my career], as if I could walk away with no regrets. It was a good career. Without fencing I wouldn't have met 99% of my friends or my older or younger colleagues, I'm really grateful for that. It's typical of me to stumble at the end." (Kyodo News, 07 Aug 2016)

HIATUS
He took a break from the sport after the 2012 Olympic Games in London. In 2013 Japanese national coach Oleg Matseichuk persuaded him to make a return to the sport after highlighting the number of other fencers still competing at international level despite being in their 30s. He served as an ambassador for Tokyo's 2020 Olympic Games bid, and also hosts an annual foil fencing tournament called the Yuki Ota Cup for primary school students in Japan, with assistance from the Morinaga club.
