When and where did you begin this sport? Her first contact with fencing was in 1995 when she took an introductory course to the sport. She initially tried foil and then moved on to epee in 1997, at the same time as competing in modern pentathlon. She stopped pentathlon to focus solely on epee in 2000.

CHINA CONNECTION
She has travelled to the People's Republic of China on more than 20 occasions. She spent three months there as a student in 1993, and in 2001 did an internship at Bayer Beijing. She enrolled in Chinese studies at university in 2001 and wrote her diploma thesis on Chinese environmental law. She speaks Mandarin, and her personal website is also available in the language. In 2011 she was appointed a goodwill ambassador for the European Union [EU]-China youth exchange for the EU-China Year of Youth, as well as EU ambassador for the 'Youth Movement' campaign in Germany. FENCING FIRST
