Russia’s Borodachev, USA’s Scruggs Win Junior Foil Gold at 2019 Junior and Cadet Fencing World Championships in Poland

TORUN, Poland, April 9, 2019—Russia’s Kirill Borodachev and USA’s Lauren Scruggs won gold medals in individual junior foil at the 2019 Junior and Cadet Fencing World Championships on the fourth of nine days of competition in Torun, Poland. The field of players included 174 men and 144 women competing in the day’s events.

Borodachev faced his teammate, Vladislav Mylnikov, in the final round of individual junior men’s foil, finishing with a score of 15-12 for the victory. Mylnikov beat Japan’s Rui Fujikura in the semi-final round, 15-7, while Borodachev defeated Egypt’s Mohamed Hamza, 15-12.

Scruggs fenced Italy’s Martina Favaretto in the gold-medal match of individual junior women’s foil, winning with a 15-13 score. Favaretto eliminated Korea’s Jihee Park in the semi-final round by a single touch, 15-14, and Scruggs took another close win over Japan’s Yuka Ueno, 11-10.

The final eight in junior men’s foil included Kirill Borodachev (RUS, gold), Vladislav Mylnikov (RUS, silver), Rui Fujikura (JPN, bronze), Mohamed Hamza (EGY, bronze), Anton Borodachev (RUS), Marcello Olivares (USA), Maciej Bem (POL) and Constant Roger (FRA).

The final eight ranking in junior women’s foil included Lauren Scruggs (USA, gold), Martina Favaretto (ITA, silver), Jihee Park (KOR, bronze), Yuka Ueno (JPN, bronze), Leonie Ebert (GER), Sera Azuma (JPN), Marta Ricci (ITA) and Elena Petrova (RUS).
