Sport Specific Information

When and where did you begin this sport? She began fencing at age seven in Jesi, Italy. There is a strong tradition of fencing in the town.

Why this sport? She took up the sport with her sister. "I did dance for a couple of years but, honestly, I didn't have a great feeling about it. It was too calm, I needed more movement."

Other information BACK ON TOP
She won her fifth individual gold medal at the European championships in 2019. She beat Russian Inna Deriglazova in the final in Dusseldorf, Germany, who she had lost to in the gold medal match at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. "It is a final that I was waiting for for a long time, I wanted it to be against her [Deriglazova]. This victory, my fifth individual at the European championships, is the most beautiful and was also the most difficult. It comes after a two-year break due to motherhood. I had to slowly get back in shape and train and make a lot of sacrifices. It is also the sweetest victory because it is the first time I had my son Ettore as my number one fan. I had promised him that I would win gold." (mammatleta.it, 20 Jun 2019; vanityfair.it, 20 Jun 2019; gazzetta.it, 20 Mar 2018; oasport.it, 06 Mar 2018)

After the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she took some time away from sport and gave birth to her son Ettore in July 2017. She returned to training in March 2018. "I thought very seriously about quitting [after the 2016 Olympic Games]. I was tired, I hadn't had a break in a long time. Always aiming high and looking for the best results can wear you down. I needed to relax. After Ettore was born, people told me to start fencing again and said that I would miss it. I thought, 'Why not?' I'll try again and see if I'm still strong enough. I think it's a good atmosphere for Ettore to grow up around - to see me sweat, make sacrifices and not give up. I think they are important values to teach him." (vanityfair.it, 20 Jun 2019)
