His fourth place finish in the men's individual sabre at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro was the highest ever finish by an Iranian fencer, male or female, in Olympic history. He lost the bronze medal bout in Rio to Korean Kim Young-Hwan. It was the first time an Iranian fencer had made it to the semifinal stages of an Olympic tournament.
