Sport Specific Information

When and where did you begin this sport? He began fencing at age three at the Cercle Nevers Escrime club in France.
Why this sport? His father was a fencing coach and would take Grumier along to training sessions. "I tried other sports but I never got as much pleasure as when I was fencing. Playing football requires going outside even when it rains, equestrian was out of the question because I am allergic to horses, and roller blading just wasn't serious enough. As for taking up epee, it was by pure chance. Nevers, the club I belonged to, specialised in it so I focused on it by accident."

Other information KENNEDY MOMENT
After winning team gold at his debut senior European championships in 2003, it took him another six years to claim an individual medal at a major international tournament. He also missed out on selection for the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. "I asked myself why it wasn't happening for me. I was on the verge of cracking but then, I had a moment of realisation. I had to follow the maxim of [John F] Kennedy. I shouldn't ask why others should perform poorly in order for me to win, but rather what I must do well myself. Since then, I've focused more on myself than on others." (SportsDeskOnline, 24 Jun 2015; lequipe.fr, 02 Nov 2010)

OTHER ACTIVITIES
He holds the national Maitre d'Armes [Master of Arms] degree for instructing fencing. (Sportmag, 01 Dec 2010)
