Sport Specific Information

When and where did you begin this sport? He began fencing at age 12 at the Peter Westbrook Foundation in Manhattan, NY, United States of America.
Why this sport? His mother introduced him to the sport. "She introduced the concept to me and when she explained what it was, I thought I was going to have like a Jedi match or I'd get to slay someone or something."

General Interest

Most influential person in career His coaches during his time at St. John's University. "I knew about the lineage of the strong fencers that went to St. John's, since I had a lot of friends and mentors who are alumni from there. And as I started approaching the real part of my fencing career, I realised that if I was anywhere other than New York, it would be quite difficult to develop my skills." (timesledger.com, 15 Oct 2017)
Sporting philosophy / motto "Don't let the lack of seeing people with your same skin colour or same face prevent you from pursuing a sport, don't let people of your own race devalue what you're doing. If this is something that you really want to do, there are so many opportunities and you will be a pioneer because you're doing something different." (timesledger.com, 15 Oct 2017)
Awards and honours While competing in his senior and final year at St. John's University in 2017/18 he was named a Third Team All-American. (redstormsports.com, 01 Jun 2018)
Ambitions To compete at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "That's what everything I'm working on is for. I don't believe in doing anything at a lower level." (timesledger.com, 15 Oct 2017)
Other information EARLY DAYS
He says his first ever fencing match at age 12 was against a much taller and older boy. "He scored the first point and one of the instructors, who is a St. John's alumnus, Adam Rodney, comes up to me and tells me a couple of instructions, like take a parry pose. So I did exactly what he said and I scored. Another St. John's alumnus, Ben Bratton, also gave me some instructions. He said, 'Just make a straight attack on him'. I did exactly that and I won the match. It was my first ever match. It was at that moment they were like, 'He gets it'. I remember it so well because it was the first time I met all these faces, first time they directly spoke to me, and now [in 2017] these are some of the closest people in my life. It's a moment I can't ever forget." (timesledger.com, 15 Oct 2017)

PETER WESTBROOK FOUNDATION
He volunteers coaching each week at the Peter Westbrook Foundation in Manhattan, NY, United States of America. "I feel a responsibility that I need to go because if it wasn't for the four other gentlemen [from the Foundation] that said, 'Hey I think you have a shot of doing this', and selecting me to train with them, I wouldn't be here." Westbrook himself said he has seen McDowald mature from the young and 'smug' fencer he once was in his youth. "Now, he [McDowald] has become humble. He works with the kids and his greatness is really coming out. One day, Curtis is going to make that Olympic team. Before, he couldn't because his pride and ego got in the way. We smacked that out of him, and now I'm so proud and impressed with him." (timesledger.com, 15 Oct 2017)
