Other information OLYMPIC PROTEST
She was denied a place in the final of the individual epee at the 2012 Olympic Games in London after a technical decision did not go her way. She thought she was through to the gold medal match when she saw the clock reach zero, but a judge then declared there was still one second of the contest left. During this time, her opponent managed to score against her and win the duel. Shin remained on the piste in tears while an appeal by the Korean Olympic Committee [KOC] was considered and eventually rejected. She went on to lose in the bronze medal match. "I just don't understand how this could have happened. I've been trying and working to get an Olympic medal for four years and now I lost it in just one second. It's just impossible to accept. I still don't know and most of all I still don't understand why my match was not declared finished." (donga.com, 24 Feb 2014; independent.co.uk, 31 Jul 2012)
