Press Release: 96 fencers qualify for 2013 World Combat Games

Budapest, 11 August 2013 – The International Fencing Federation (FIE) announced today the 96 athletes having qualified for the 2013 World Combat Games 18 – 26 October in October in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Among the qualified fencers are Ana Maria Branza (ROU, 2013 European Champion in women’s epee), Ruben Limardo (VEN, 2012 Olympic Champion in men’s epee), Arianna Errigo (ITA, World Champion in women’s individual and team foil 2013), Andrea Cassara (ITA, Olympic Champion 2012 with the team in men’s foil), Olga Kharlan (UKR, World Champion 2013 in women’s sabre), and Veniamin Reshetnikov (RUS, World Champion in men’s individual and team sabre 2013).

Fencing will feature for the first time on the programme of these multi-sports games. It will be only individual events with a 16 direct elimination table. Competition days will be 24 - 26 October:

24 October: men’s sabre and women’s foil

25 October: men’s epee and women’s sabre

26 October: women’s epee and men’s foil

FIE Secretary General Frederic Pietruszka said about the World Combat Games: “The FIE is content that fencing is on the programme of these new multi-sports games. Fencing in its essence is a combat sport and a form of martial art and the World Combat Games provide an excellent platform to reach out to a new audience.”

The 15 sports at the 2013 World Combat Games are Aikido, Boxing, Fencing, Judo, Jujitsu, Karate, Kendo, Kickboxing, Muaythai, Sambo, Savate, Sumo, Taekwondo, Wrestling, Wushu. The Games are a top level international event which at the same time provides all participants with an excellent opportunity to meet sportsmen from all over the world.
