Press Release: 2013 Fencing World Championships start tomorrow

Budapest, 4 August 2013 – The 2013 Fencing World Championships kick off tomorrow. From 5 to 12 August, 832 athletes from 100 nations fight in six disciplines for the gold medals, individual and team. The first finals are on 7 August in women’s foil and men’s sabre. Team competitions start on 10 August.

Many of the London 2012 gold medal winners will be on the pistes again; among them

Hungarian Olympic Champion in men’s sabre, Aaron Szilagyi, and Italian foil star Valentina Vezzali. Vezzali will compete only three months after giving birth to her second child. Egyptian Olympic silver medallist Alaaeldin Abouelkassem will compete as well as Ruben Limardo, Venezuela’s first Olympic Champion in fencing.

For these world championships the FIE reached several agreements with broadcasters to televise the event world wide. In addition, the world championships are live streamed from 7 to 12 August on the Fencing Channel on YouTube at www.youtube.com/fencing.

Live results are available on www.fie.org and interested media can access all news, results and flash quotes on the FIE world championships media info box.

As the FIE is celebrating its centennial in 2013, these world championships have a specific significance. The FIE will show the FIE 100 Hall of Fame as well as an exhibition about the history of fencing and the FIE, making valuable fencing artefacts available to the public. Also, the elections to the FIE Athletes Commission will be conducted.
