Press Release: FIE launching FIE Athletes Career Programme 2014

Budapest, 8 August 2013 – Alisher Usmanov, President of the International Fencing Federation (FIE) announced yesterday during the 2013 Fencing World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, the launch of the FIE Athletes Career Programme 2014 (FIE ACP 2014). The FIE ACP 2014 programme aims at preparing fencers for their professional life after finishing their sports career.

The concept for the programme has been developed in close cooperation with the IOC and is designed to use and create synergies with the IOC Athletes Career Programme. The focus is on education, life skills and employment. In addition offers specific training in coaching, communication and administration to athletes that seek to pursue a career within the field of fencing. Further details of the programme are available on the FIE website www.fie.org.

Alisher Usmanov said about the FIE initiative: “Our initiative to launch the FIE Athletes Career Programme is an important project for the FIE because it seeks to solve an issue that affects hundreds of athletes, namely, finding their calling after retirement from active sport. I am certain that all athletes and fencers in particular, have unique qualities and experience which will provide a valuable contribution to society”.

“The IOC is very pleased to recognise the efforts of the FIE in supporting their athletes to achieve success on and off the field of play. In promoting the IOC Athlete Career Programme and offering tailored services to fencers, they are allowing them for a successful dual career and life after sport. We highly value our partnership and trust that our initiatives will prove productive and successful,” said Claudia Bokel, Chair of the IOC Athletes Commission and former world champion in women’s epee.
