Gold for Italy’s Curatoli and Team Korea at Padua “Trofeo Luxardo” Men’s Sabre Fencing World Cup

PADUA, Italy, March 10, 2019—Italy’s Luca Curatoli and Team Korea took gold medals in Padua, Italy at the 62nd “Trofeo Luxardo” Men’s Sabre World Cup. The event, held at Padua’s Kioene Arena, drew 212 fencers and teams from 28 countries.

Curatoli overcame his teammate, world champion and Olympic gold medallist Aldo Montano, in the final round of the men’s individual sabre event, 15-13. Montano defeated German Max Hartung in the semi-final, 15-10, and Curatoli beat German Benedikt Wagner, 15-12. Notably, Russian world champion Veniamin Reshetnikov was eliminated by Montano in the quarter-finals, 15-13, and Hartung edged-out USA’s top-ranked Eli Dershwitz by a point, 15-14.

In the men’s team sabre competition, the Korean men’s team beat Iran in the final, 45-28. Iran eliminated Italy in a close semi-final round, 45-43, while Korea beat Romania, 45-28. In the match for third place, Italy was victorious over Romania, 45-41.

The top-eight individual ranking at the 2019 Padua “Trofeo Luxardo” Men’s Sabre World Cup included Luca Curatoli (ITA, gold), Aldo Montano (ITA, silver), Max Hartung (GER, bronze), Benedikt Wagner (GER, bronze), Eli Dershwitz (USA), Veniamin Reshetnikov (RUS), Francesco D’Armiento (ITA) and Tiberiu Dolniceanu (ROU).

The top-eight men’s sabre teams included Korea (gold), Iran (silver), Italy (bronze), Romania, Hungary, USA, China and Japan.
