World Fencing Day: September 8, 2018
LAUSANNE, Switz., April 17, 2018 — World Fencing Day will take place on Saturday, September 8, with countries worldwide taking part in promoting the Olympic sport of fencing throughout their nations. It is a day when the focus on competitive swordsmanship reaches children, communities, schools, and new spectators discovering a sport steeped in history and embracing the future.
The first World Fencing Day, on September 9th, 2017, featured Olympic and World Champion fencers demonstrating their talents to excited schoolchildren, demonstrations of fencing in public plazas and shopping malls from Nepal to Rio, fencing clubs opening their doors to the public to try a duel for free, bouting on the beaches of California and shipping docks of Great Britain, hundreds of Chinese children fencing on football fields, and even a sky-high fencing match atop a 192-metre tower above Auckland, New Zealand.
This year, the FIE is celebrating its 105th anniversary. In cooperation with its 153 member countries, it is encouraging even more participation to reach the masses with the excitement and energy of fencing. Fencing federations, clubs, individuals, teams, schools, manufacturers, and elite champions will join together to introduce and share their enthusiasm and dedication with the world.
Stay tuned for more information about events and activities to come on September 8, and join with us to celebrate this truly global sport.
