Other information FROM CUBA TO FRANCE
Born in Cuba, he won a silver medal for the Caribbean nation in individual epee at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. After becoming disillusioned with the challenges he faced everyday, he decided to make a new life for himself in Europe. With help from Spaniards he knew through fencing, he crossed the border into Spain following the 2002 World Championships in Lisbon, Portugal. His friends had to smuggle him across the border as the Cuban coach had kept all the athletes' passports during the tournament. He spent two years in Spain before moving to France, where he became a citizen in 2010. "None of my teammates knew what I was about to do when we went to Portugal. I wanted to keep it a secret so nobody would try to stop me. I had it all planned before I went. It was almost at the end of the competition when I escaped. It all happened like in a movie."
