Sport Specific Information

When and where did you begin this sport? She began fencing at age seven in San Antonio, TX, United States of America.

Why this sport? Her parents Robert and Tracy Hurley were both fencers. She and her older sister Kelley followed in their footsteps and were coached by their parents. "Our parents met in fencing. We would go to tournaments together and they would fence the older age groups and we would fence the young, youth age groups. I can't imagine it any other way because our parents both used to fence. It's kind of a whole family business."

Other information FENCING SISTERS
She has a close relationship with older sister Kelley, although it was not always that way growing up according to Kelley. "When I was maybe 15 or 16 and Courtney was 12 or 13, Courtney started to get good enough to beat me, and that was when tension sort of started. It was tough as a sister when your younger sister can finally beat you. But then, right around when I went to college, our competitiveness toward each other kind of stopped. And then once Courtney joined me in college, we actually became roommates, and I'd say that's when we started to get pretty close. Our competitive fire was no longer toward each other, it was more a team effort - Courtney and I versus everyone else. And I'd say since then, our relationship has been tighter than any other sibling relationship I've ever encountered." (cosmopolitan.com, 02 Jun 2016)

OTHER ACTIVITIES
She runs Hurley Tactics, a website that offers fencing coaching and tactics through a range of memberships. In June 2021, she said she was also creating an events app with her mother. "I'm hoping ours is a mixture of events and then has a social media aspect to it. There's not really that many events apps out there. Facebook is really your big one. We started it because we were in Paris and we were trying to find things to do in Paris and Facebook was really the only way you could find events. So that's something that started the whole process." (usafencing.org, 07 Jun 2021; hurleytactics.com, 01 Jan 2021)

FURTHER EDUCATION
She has studied for a master's degree in business administration. (washingtonpost.com, 20 April 2017)
