Rio Loves Fencing: Public demonstration event April 20-21

15 Apr 2016

RIO DE JANEIRO (April 15) – The Brazilian public will get a taste of Olympic fencing on April 20-21, when the Rio Loves Fencing demonstration event takes place on the Copacabana.

At the stunning location, top Brazilian fencers including world No. 12 Nathalie Moellhausen will do battle on a show piste.

“This is going to be a festival of fencing,” said Arno Périllier Schneider, the head of fencing at the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee.

“People from all walks of life are going to discover fencing in Rio – and for many it will be an unforgettable first contact with our sport,” he added.

Members of the public will get the chance to try fencing for themselves, and there will be all sorts of activities for children. The event marks the start of a week of fencing in Rio, where the official Olympic test event begins at the Carioca Arena 3.

The test event is comprised of the Rio stage of the Fencing Grand Prix in epee, on April 23-24, and also the World Championships for men’s team sabre and women’s team foil, on April 26-27. Back at the public demonstration event, all three weapons - foil, epee and sabre - will be showcased by masters of the sport. The action starts at 9 a.m. and draws to a close at 4 p.m.

At the same time, a special International Fencing Federation initiative to give thousands of schoolchildren in Rio the chance to discover fencing will be nearing its end.

The two-month Fencing School program has visited nearly 40 schools and communities in a variety of the city’s barrios, and has been met with great enthusiasm.
